HEFF Member's International Distribution Centre Creates Jobs

Cake manufacturer and HEFF member Perfection Foods is set to deliver a "significant" jobs boost with its new international distribution centre in Leicester, director Gurdeep Singh Bath has told Insider. It follows the opening of the company's second Walsall site in February.

Perfection Foods was established in 2000 and supplies major supermarket chains, including Asda and Morrisons, as well as wholesalers such as Makro, Batleys and Bestways.

The new 110,000 sq ft distribution centre in Leicester, which has been acquired as a result of "soaring" export demand, could potentially create hundreds of jobs if the company decides to put in production capacity.

"We are rapidly expanding right now," said Singh Bath. "We're exporting right across Europe in more than ten different markets.

"We're very successful on the export side and are starting to get into key markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and North Africa, in particular. That is why we have acquired the new site in Leicester. We're looking to move to the site by 2014."

The company, which currently employs more than 50 staff, began exporting its high-end, handmade cake products in 2010, initially starting with six European countries before expanding to ten.

The new Walsall facility, which was opened by trade minister Lord Green, is the export companion to the Wednesbury site for the domestic market. Perfection Foods is currently recruiting 70 additional staff for the export factory.

Singh Bath said: "The site in Walsall is purely for exports, but the Leicester is an example of what we're going into for emerging markets. The idea is to feed the emerging markets.

"It's still in its early days but we expect a significant job boost from it, especially if we put production in."

He added that the success of the business was down to the high quality of its products and its commitment to exports: "We are very active on exports, a lot more active than many UK businesses, especially in the food sector."

The factory in Walsall Enterprise Park was funded by HSBC's Midlands commercial division, which provided a loan facility.
